The CHOICE Project

Comprehensive Health Options through Innovative Community Engagement

1.0 Project Overview

The CHOICE Project is a transformative, gender-responsive initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada and led globally by Oxfam. CAVWOC proudly collaborates as part of a multi-sectoral consortium to advance the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) of the most vulnerable and marginalized populations in Malawi.

Geographically focused on Lilongwe and Balaka districts, the project moves away from traditional, rigid medical models to explicitly champion the bodily autonomy and health rights of adolescent girls, young women (AGYW), and persons of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC).

2.0 Gender-Transformative Framework

The CHOICE project targets the root causes of healthcare exclusion, poverty, and systemic gender inequality. The core interventions focus on two primary channels:

Dismantling Harmful Norms

Tackling traditional socio-cultural norms, including child, early, and forced marriages that disrupt education and limit youth decision-making power.

Upgrading Health Facilities

Establishing dedicated, user-friendly Youth Corners in public health centers, sensitizing staff, and guaranteeing stigma-free access to contraceptive care and safe abortion services.

3.0 Community-Led Social Accountability

A central pillar of the CHOICE project is co-creating healthcare quality with community residents. By operationalizing tools like the Community Score Card (CSC) and digital feedback channels, citizens and parents are empowered to monitor local clinics directly.

Traditional chiefs and faith leaders are also heavily engaged to transform from enforcers of rigid traditions into proactive advocates for reproductive justice.
